Tepid, anxious, the wooden handle of the tool rests in your palms. It’s a heavy thing. You’ve never held something like this before, something so concretely violent. Something like an axe can have a benign purpose, the chopping of wood. Matches can light candles, give light, warmth. Chainsaws cannot hide. They are for destruction, removal, separation, segmentation. It’s the kind of thing he was. The tree is ahead of you. It’s grotesque. Every color on it mutates in the moonlight, refracting into some kind of perversion, greens into purples, browns into blues. Bark on the tree seems to slide down the side, globbing off into the dirt with thuds and dissipation with fizzes. As you approach, you hold your breath to avoid the smell, and for a moment it sounds like a rush beneath your feet. A rhythmic pulling and pushing, a tide? No, a pulse beneath your soles. The ground responds, digesting its needs. The soil is tainted, sandy with the tree’s greed, taking and taking its moisture for miles. Masses of fluid cling to the roots and tendrils. They reek of puss. Some of them are scarred over, as if they’ve burst and refilled over time. This is the kind of rot that persists, the kind of sickness that makes itself stay. You rend and wring out pieces of bark, drenching yourself in its mucas and indigo sap. Feeling chunks of flesh and congealed mucus etches a smile onto your face. Within the organic waste you see your reflection, and for the first time it doesn't distrub you. A face isn't something to be feared. There are not millions of realities ahead of you, only this one. You continue the process, carving out a home for yourself. Seeing the mess, you begin to plaster pieces of it back together, smearing the bile back into the dirt, back into the notches between branches. You and the tree breathe together. You have a pulse now too. When your work is completed, a home is made just for you. You step inside the cavern, exactly as wide as your shoulders. A membrane begins to seal over you and with one final breath, you feel whole here. It's warm. It's safe. It's protected. To think, all this time, you'd been trying to kill your own home. The other bones inside sit comfortably with yours. You are not the first one to realize this place, to see it for the haven it is. Unfortunately to other eyes, you appear a monster. Your beating heart, your breath, your waste, are not evidence of your life but of your deviance. Such safe walls, so carefully considered, are perverted.
